Art has the beautiful ability to evoke emotions in people. But unfortunately, not all art is made with roses and pinks. Some are gory, haunting, and outright terrifying. From the cut off head of a man, to a barren land where no life exists anymore, art has time and again brought out some really horrifying and fearsome pieces.

Caravaggio’s iconic painting ‘Judith Beheading Holofernes’ is a scene from a biblical story. The painting shows the moment when Judith, a Jewish widow, killed the Assyrian general Holofernes. The intensity and emotions of this painting is both eerie and sad. Caravaggio’s use of chiaroscuro in the painting only amplifies the dramatic effect and Judith’s expression of disgust with the General can be seen clearly. The realism with which Caravaggio shows the act of violence is what makes this painting so chilling.

While not many think of ‘The Scream’ as a painting that induces horror, but ‘The Scream’ sure screams a bit of terror. The painting shows existential dread and psychological horror. The painting shows a figure standing on a bridge, screaming or hearing a scream, with a swirling sky in the background. Munch’s use of bold lines and bright colours creates a sense of anxiety and unease. The distorted face, the wide, hollow eyes and open mouth, convey a sense of terror and angst.

Henry Fuseli’s ‘The Nightmare’ is a Gothic horror painting. It shows a woman lying on her back in deep sleep, with her arms stretched out. And while the woman seems completely at ease, there is a demon sitting on her. A demonic incubus is sitting on her chest and a ghostly horse’s head emerges from the darkness. Medusa, one of the most powerful women in history, meets a rather terrifying end in Caravaggio’s painting. The painting features just the severed head of ‘Medusa’, a woman so strong her gaze could turn people to stone, now turned to ‘nothing’. The painting is drawn on a circular canvas and shows snakes writhing from her scalp instead of hair. The horror and agony on Medusa’s face is terrifying to say the least and as her mouth looks like she is screaming, her eyes show immense pain.

Salvador Dali’s ‘The Face of War’ is a haunting painting that shows the horrors of conflict. The painting features a twisted, decaying face set against a desert-like background which makes it look like a barren land with just the dead and decaying remaining over there. The hollow eyes and mouth contain smaller faces, each with the same expression of agony and despair, and the snakes around are a sign of menace and evil.
