A host family is a person or family that agrees to have a student live in their home for a set period of time, usually while they study. Host families offer housing, cultural support, and a welcoming environment for students who are visiting a new culture.

Hosting an international student is an excellent way for families to learn about different cultures and build relationships with other countries worldwide. In addition, hosting programs allow young people to explore the world by living with an American family for one or two semesters during high school or college.

When you host an exchange student, you learn how build relationships with those who are different with you. By learning to relate to those who may have had an upbringing that varies greatly from your own, your ability to connect, communicate, and collaborate with others is greatly enhanced.

It seems simple, but hosting is more involved than you may realize. A good host has to be aware of the flow of service in the dining room at all times. They must handle reservations, server seating rotation, and customer wait times, all while welcoming each guest that walks through the door.

Your weekly income as a host could be as much as £250 per student, depending primarily on where you live and the services you are asked to provide e.g. meals, private bathroom. Your potential earnings per student will depend on your proximity to a language school and the quality of the accommodation you can provide.

The host sets the tone for the night with their charisma, humor, and ability to connect with not only the audience in front of them, but also the people watching at home. A host's main goal is to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.

Empathetic hosting plays to the guest's needs and wants, but—as paradoxical as this may sound—you do it to please yourself, too. This doesn't mean that you should give your lifeblood to care for your guest and force yourself, by God, to like it.
