About Sheffield Park and Garden
A magnificent 120-acre landscaped garden laid out in the C18 and extended with the advice of history’s leading designers, including Capability Brown and Humphry Repton. The garden was further developed early last century by its owner Arthur Soames, who planted on an ambitious scale much of what the visitor sees today including rare and exotic trees and shrubs. Wander around the paths at your leisure that lead you around a succession of four large lakes for superb views of the garden. Extensive collection of trees and shrubs mirrored in the tranquil waters. Bluebells in Walk Wood. Impressive specimens include ancient pollarded sweet chestnuts, towering giant redwoods and an avenue of Chusan palms. The garden is renowned for displays of spring bulbs and stunning displays in May of rhododendrons and the National collection of Ghent azaleas. Water lilies dress the lakes during the summer months. In the autumn the garden is transformed by a blaze of colour from the trees planted for their autumn colour including Nyssa sylvatica, Amelanchier and Acer palmatum, these and other fine specimen trees, particularly North American varieties produce gold, amber, ruby and emerald true gems of nature. When autumn passes the garden takes on another magic with ‘Jack Frost’ adding his glistening diamond touch. Winter walks can be enjoyed, as the garden is open all through the year except Christmas eve and Christmas day.
