In a letter to lawmakers, Ticketmaster revealed its plan to prohibit users from holding multiple accounts on the platform. This decision comes in response to a lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) last month, accusing Ticketmaster and Live Nation Entertainment of colluding with scalpers and violating the BOTS Act. The lawsuit alleges that Ticketmaster has been working hand-in-hand with ticket brokers, enabling them to bypass purchase limits on the primary market and then resell tickets at inflated prices on the secondary market.
But here's where it gets controversial: Ticketmaster's letter, signed by Live Nation's executive vp Dan Wall, denies any wrongdoing and claims the FTC's lawsuit presents a distorted view of the facts. The FTC lawsuit is just the tip of the iceberg for Live Nation, which is also facing an antitrust lawsuit from the Department of Justice. Critics, like the National Independent Venue Association, argue that Live Nation's actions are too little, too late, and that they've betrayed fans and artists by enabling predatory resellers.
