How difficult is it to get into UCSD? ›

For every 100 applicants, 24 are admitted. This means the school is very selective. If you meet UCSD's requirements for GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and other components of the application, you have a great shot at getting in.

The average GPA at UCSD is 4. This makes UCSD Extremely Competitive for GPAs. (Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA. With a GPA of 4, UCSD requires you to be at the top of your class.

If you're looking at acceptance rate alone, then UC Santa Barbara is more difficult to get into. However, each college is looking to fill its incoming class with a variety of students with different strengths, backgrounds, etc.

Grade Point Average (GPA) Requirement

California residents must earn a GPA of 3.0 (or better) with no grade lower than "C."

While UCSD doesn't have a strict GPA cutoff, you'll want to aim for a competitive GPA to maximize your chances of being admitted. In general, for UCSD, a weighted GPA of 4.0 or higher is considered competitive, while an unweighted GPA should be around 3.85 or higher.

Easiest UC Schools to Get Into

Even if UCLA and Berkeley are reaches, there's still hope of attending a UC school. The easiest UC schools to get into include UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside, and UC Merced, all of which have acceptance rates over 50%.

The national average for a GPA is around 3.0 and a 1.7 GPA puts you below that average. A 1.7 GPA means that you've gotten only C-s and D+s in your high school classes so far. Since this GPA is significantly below a 2.0, it will make things very difficult for you in the college application process.

So, strictly speaking, a 3.9 GPA is just a tenth shy of a perfect score and demonstrates academic excellence in every class. Moreover, a 3.9 GPA far exceeds the average GPA that most colleges use as their unspoken baseline for competitive admission (3.0) and the benchmark GPA for more selective colleges (3.5).
