Until 1990, notes were burned and the heat helped warm up the Bank of England! However, that's not very good for the environment or very efficient. The Bank upgraded its equipment in the early 1990s and moved away from that method. In the early 2000s, they started to recycle old bank notes by composting them!

Disclosure: Old Bank of England banknotes that are taken out of circulation are destroyed. Since 2011, we have recycled most of our old paper banknotes. They are either used to create a soil improver or processed at a local energy recovery facility to generate electricity.

Exchanging old notes at the Post Office

The Post Office Opens in a new window will accept most old notes as a deposit into any UK bank account you can access with them. There are also 48 Post Office branches across the UK that will swap old banknotes, even if you do not have a bank account.

When enough old bills have been collected, the Federal Reserve Banks will shred them. If you take a tour of a Federal Reserve Bank, you can sometimes take home your very own unique souvenir: a bag of shredded paper money!

Various Federal Reserve banks recycle the shreds in different ways. Some use it for compost, building insulation or cement. Some use it to generate electricity. Others turn it into trinkets, like snow globes or piggy banks filled with shredded money — a second act for that blemished bill.

As a general rule, we will only reimburse you with the face value of a damaged banknote if you still have at least half of the banknote. To apply for a reimbursem*nt, fill out our damaged banknote application form and send it to us with all of the remains of the banknote.

The current £10 note replaces our paper £10 note which was withdrawn from circulation on 1 March 2018. You may be able to deposit withdrawn notes at your own bank or with the Post Office. Alternatively, you can exchange withdrawn banknotes with selected Post Office branches or with the Bank of England.

Banks that allow you to exchange paper notes will generally allow you to deposit the money into the account that you hold with them. Banks and building societies happy to exchange the old notes include Halifax, Lloyds, Nationwide, Barclays, NatWest and Santander - though keep in mind they may have a cut-off date.

How do I exchange withdrawn Bank of England notes? Many banks accept withdrawn notes as deposits from customers. The Post Office will also accept withdrawn notes as a deposit into any bank account you can access at the Post Office. And you can always exchange withdrawn notes with us.

The bank will simply take in your old notes and issue new ones. If you are exchanging a foreign currency for dollars, the bank should also provide a receipt that includes the exchange rate used and any fees.

It is U.S. government policy that all designs of Federal Reserve notes remain legal tender, or legally valid for payments, regardless of when they were issued. This policy includes all denominations of Federal Reserve notes, from 1914 to present as per 31 U.S.C.

Section 331 of Title 18 of the United States code provides criminal penalties for anyone who fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the Mints of the United States.

Under regulations issued by the Department of the Treasury, mutilated United States currency may be exchanged at face value if: More than 50% of a note identifiable as United States currency is present.

If a bill is counterfeit, it is sent to the Secret Service. But if it's merely unfit by the Fed's standards, then the machine shreds it. Those shredded notes are sent to landfills or packaged and provided as souvenirs to the public on Federal Reserve Bank tours.
