Will banks accept old notes?
The bank will simply take in your old notes and issue new ones. If you are exchanging a foreign currency for dollars, the bank should also provide a receipt that includes the exchange rate used and any fees.
Exchanging old banknotes
Many banks accept withdrawn notes as deposits from customers. The Post Office will also accept withdrawn notes as a deposit into any bank account you can access at the Post Office. And you can always exchange withdrawn notes with us.
All U.S. currency remains legal tender, regardless of when it was issued.
It is U.S. government policy that all designs of Federal Reserve notes remain legal tender, or legally valid for payments, regardless of when they were issued. This policy includes all denominations of Federal Reserve notes, from 1914 to present as per 31 U.S.C. § 5103.
Best place to exchange currency: Your bank or credit union
Many banks offer currency exchange to their customers. Though there may be a small fee if you exchange less than a certain amount, your bank or credit union will almost always be the cheapest place to exchange currency.
This note replaces our paper £20 note which was withdrawn from circulation after 30 September 2022. You may be able to deposit withdrawn notes at your own bank or with the Post Office. Alternatively, you can exchange withdrawn banknotes with selected Post Office branches or with the Bank of England.
If you find old paper notes in your wallet or around the house don't throw them out. All “genuine” banknotes that have been withdrawn from circulation can be swapped for a newer equivalent, as they still retain their face value, the Bank of England explained. The Supreme Court, in the ruling, reviewed its earlier order that the old notes should cease be legal tender by the last day of December 2023. The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the lifespan of the redesigned 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes.
It's one of those bills that you hold up to the light and see a faint image of whoever is on the bill. You can take it to a bank and they would gladly exchange it for you. It does not even have to be the bank where you do business at.
Why won't ATM take old $100 bills?
There are two probable reasons. First is that a bill that old might be too beat up and worn out for the machine to accept. Second is that large bills from before 1990 lack any modern security features, so the machine might think the bill is fake.
Most of the $100 bills that sell for five figures, six figures or more are vintage currency from the pre-1914 era when bills became Benjamins. But plenty of C-notes from the modern era can also be worth big money — and they usually derive their value from their serial numbers.
This because the US government had terminated circulation of them in the late 1960's. They are still legal tender and all banks will accept one when it is presented to them.
Exchange of mutilated banknotes
Members of the public wanting to exchange mutilated banknotes can do so at all Commercial Bank branches where their account is held.
“We have set a deadline for using paper notes as 29th September 2023. The Northern Ireland and Scottish note issuing banks will continue to accept old paper-based notes and there are currently no plans to change this.”
Exchange old £20 and £50 notes at The Bank of England
One option is to take the old paper notes down to the Central Bank in person. There is currently no time limit when it comes to exchanging your old UK banknotes at the Bank of England.

In most cases, old versions of a currency can still be used in ATMs, as long as they are still legal tender. However, if the currency has been demonetized or replaced with a new version, it may no longer be accepted by ATMs.
If you take your old banknotes to a commercial bank they may exchange them for current banknotes. Please bear in mind that a commercial bank may require time to confirm that a banknote from a previous banknote series is genuine or may need to send such banknotes to the Reserve Bank for confirmation.

Can I get change from the post office?
What is the Change Giving service at Post Office? If you're a business banking customer and you regularly need to exchange cash for coins, you can do this at the Post Office with selected banks using our Change Giving and Change Giving “l*te” services.
If the bills need to be replaced, they will issue new, crisp bills to the bank that requested the replacement. The Federal Reserve Bank will then store the damaged bills for destruction. When enough old bills have been collected, the Federal Reserve Banks will shred them.
Paying money into your account at the Post Office®
You can pay in both notes and coins at a Post Office® counter. Different Post Office® branches may have their own maximum deposit amount. You'll need your account details and the equivalent total that you wish to deposit in coins and/or notes.
“Please click here to create your profile, generate reference and print out receipt for you to proceed to the nearest CBN Branch to deposit your old N1000, N500 and N200 notes into your bank account,” a notice on the portal reads. “Please visit this link, https://crs.cbn.gov.ng, ONLY through the CBN website.
The CBN later extended the validity of the old notes to December 2023 but the apex bank, with a new governor Yemi Cardoso, says the old currency notes are now legal tenders indefinitely.
